Family History-Elwood Livingston
My 1st blog will let you understand where I get my unique sense of humor and how it intertwines with everyday life..I come from a long line of preachers and teachers but my forefathers also were responsible for a lot of concepts that have come to fruition today.I would like to tell you about how my great great grandfather helped change restaurant service as we know it. Elwood Livingston was a common negro living in Mexia, Texas during the civil rights movement . You know the story. Well Elwood came into some money and decided to open a burger shack. He was making so much money from local residents that he decided to build the west side the building into a dining area due to overcrowdiness. Well one night , two drunk white supremist decided that they would try to destroy what this business minded black guy had built and rammed their truck through the under constructed dining area. Elwood came to work the following morning and was devasted. He feared that because of this it could take months to rebuild and he would lose his customers. As he walked outside he noticed , a line had formed of customers waiting to be served. Elwood thought for a minute and told all customers with vehicles to come to the side of the building that was wiped out. He said they could order to go plates and be on their way. Because of this he decided to leave this previously destroyed area of the building open and call it the drive-thru.. Word of this new business idea spread throughout the South and black businessmen constructed their food shacks with one side incomplete. Therefore Elwood Livingston became a Southern hero and was credited with starting the Drive-Thru..
